After seeing a coupe quattro in Chris Semple's parts yard that had been smashed hard in the side I asked him what happened. He mentioned that the coupe was perpendicular to a 55 mph road in Long Island NY and the night was very foggy. A driver was coming down the road and drifted into the breakdown lane and smashed into the side of the coupe, totalling the car and breaking the drivers ribs. This made me wonder if things would have been different had the coupe had better lighting on the side of the car? The stock US DOT style side markers don't really throw that much light out to the side, not to mention how much the headlights suck. I wired up my side markers to work as both markers that turn on with the parking lights and also as repeaters for my turn signals. This is possible because the Audi turn signal circuit is grounded when not active. This is very fortunate as it provides a ground for the other side of the coil depending on if the city lights are on or not. You can read more about the wiring on Huw Powell's website here.
The goal of this documentation is to provide the part numbers I used for this conversion. In total the cost came out to less than $50 for everything I needed. The table below shows what parts are needed.
The nice thing about the socket is that it comes with about 10 feet of wiring which makes it nice and easy to wire with no connections close to the socket. The only other thing that I did was cut off some of the mounting tabs as I didn't want to cut a complicated hole. I did leave one of the tabs on and cut a small notch using an air file. I then used a little 3M strip caulk to secure the lens to the body.
