I've always wanted to add express (one touch) windows to my car, but the only solution I was aware of was to use the one-touch relay that came equipped on the later type 89 and type 44 cars. Huw Powell did a write up on how to use these relays on his website. The trouble is that these allowed one touch in only ONE direction. I really wanted one touch in both directions. I did a little bit of digging and found a controller module sold by Autoloc which would do just what I wanted. I bought two of the Autoloc WC1000 one touch window controllers for $30/each (although the price seems to have gone up a bit) at the same time as buying a keyless entry system from them. You need one module per window.

When I went to test my switches to see what pins I needed to connect to the controller I was dismayed that the stock configuration is to have a constant 12 volts applied to both sides of the motor when the switch is at rest, and apply a ground when the switch is operated in either direction. The problem with this is that the WC1000 expects a 12 volt signal when the switch is pressed, and expects to send 12 volts to the window motor as an output. I first designed a small circuit that would convert the outputs from my switch to work with the express controller.

In talking with Huw about all of this he mentioned that it would probably be easier to just re-wire the switch so that it would apply ground to both sides of the motor at rest and apply 12 volts when pressed up or down. This posed another small problem: The small light inside the window switch is an LED, which means that when you attempt to send current the oposite way through the switch, it will not light up. I set about the painfull task of re-soldering the LED in the opposite direction when I found a much easier solution.. The type 89 window switches appear to work in the way I needed them to, and thus the LED was already wired the other way. So I simply swapped the faceplate on the switch and it looks just like the other switches in the panel.

Note that the window motor pins are swapped. If you didn't do this, then the window would go down when pressing the switch up and up on switch down. The reason for this is because the polarity is now reversed from the stock setup.

All this messing around was worth it the first time I flipped the switch... I look forward to NOT messing with my window switches while accellerating away from the toll booth!
